Neck rejuvenation has become a popular inquiry here in our Scottsdale facial plastic surgery practice. Surgical and non-surgical options are available for what has come to be known as a “neck lift.” Here’s a quick neck lift FAQ to help you start your research. However, we recommend contacting us to have a consultation to determine if this procedure is right for you.

Neck Lift Questions and Answers

What Is a Neck Lift?

Your face is smooth and youthful, but your neck may be giving away your true age. Vertical banding, creases, wrinkles and jowls begin to develop that make you appear older than you actually are. With a neck lift, you can tighten the skin and muscles in your jaw line, which helps to improve the appearance of your neckline and gives you younger looking skin.

A neck lift is often performed as part of a facelift and is rarely performed alone; however, some patients may have had a facelift or mini lift, and their necks are giving away their true age. In this case, a neck lift procedure can help balance out your look and help you escape the need for scarfs and turtlenecks for good.

How Is a Neck Lift Performed?

When you only need slight contouring, liposuction can help to reduce a double chin and perhaps a lower facelift, sometimes called a mini lift. For a full neck lift, incisions are made beneath your chin or ears depending on the areas that need to be fixed. Afterward, the platysma muscle is sewn together like a shoelace so that it is tighter. Any excess fat or skin that is along the neck are trimmed away. Afterward, the skin is moved into the proper position and secured using sutures. These incisions are then closed before bandages are placed around the wounds.

In general, a board certified facial plastic surgeon will use Botox injections for non-surgical lifts. This technique does not last as long as plastic surgery, and it is only effective for minor changes. You may want to consider getting plastic surgery to tighten your neck if you want to have long-lasting, permanent changes to the way your neck looks.

What About Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction works to remove excess fat, generally in the submental region or double chin. It can help to create a more graceful neckline, but liposuction does not help with sagging skin such as what you see with “turkey neck.” This procedure is most effective for younger individuals because they have the skin elasticity that allows their neckline to bounce back to normal. If you have excess skin that needs to be removed, liposuction will not be as effective.

During the procedure, one or two incisions are made beneath your chin or ears. A liposuction cannula is used to remove excess fat. Afterward, you may need one to two weeks to heal. Most people are able to return to their normal activities within 14 days.

How Much Does a Neck Lift Cost?

The price of a neck lift varies from person to person. It is more important that you look for a facial plastic surgeon with a good reputation rather than someone who advertises the lowest prices. Find a facial plastic surgeon who has a track record of success, positive client reviews and a good reputation. Your plastic surgery procedure will last for years, so it is important to find the most qualified surgeon possible.
